This forum is for the discussion of 'core topics' of the IUFRO unit 2.04.02, including breeding theory, mating designs, experimental designs, genetic evaluation, estimation of variance components, prediction of breeding values, etc.

Feel free to start any discussion.

Welcome to the web site of the IUFRO unit 2.04.02: breeding theory and progeny testing. This site is a container for the unit newsletter, announcements, discussions, etc. If you work breeding trees and are interested on the topics covered by the unit you are welcome to join this site. All the information in this site is visible to the public, but only registered members can post news and participate in the forum.

This site is a monument to open source software and cheap commodity hardware. The site is powered by the Drupal Content Management System, written in PHP and relying on a MySQL database. There is a blog post explaining the technical details of the Drupal installation. The content is seved by Apache, of course. All software runs on a generic beige box with Red Hat Linux, hosted somewhere in Hong Kong.

The what, who and where of this unit

Submitted by Luis Apiolaza on Tue, 2005-12-06 10:55.

What

The unit on Breeding theory and progeny testing was formed in 1986 by a merger of two long-standing and active units, S2.04-02 Breeding theory and S2.04-03 Progeny testing, in recognition of the common interests of the two groups. The unit is interested in research leading to the most effective methods for developing selection criteria and the prediction of genetic gain from selection, selection index theory, the estimation of environmental and genetic effects, use of marker information, the monitoring of genetic diversity in seed orchards, and progeny variability requirements for future changes in the environment.

Although this IUFRO unit is called Breeding theory and progeny testing, we are hoping to cover much more in this site. Most people working in the 'core' topics of the unit are also actively involved in operational tree breeding programmes, use of advanced reproductive techniques, applications of molecular information to breeding and conservation efforts and teaching. If you work or study any of these areas you are welcome to use and join this site: researchers, breeders, university students have a place here.
